Why are milking procedures and teat sanitation important?

  • Increase throughput (or the number of cows that can be milked in a given period of time). This improves labor efficiency.
  • Reduction in occurrence of environmental mastitis - One study found a 50% reduction. This also assists in maintaining good bacteria counts and somatic cell counts.
  • Eliminate spread of contagious mastitis.

This chapter addresses:

  • Cow environment.
  • Milking procedures, including directions for developing your own written procedures.
  • Product selection tips.
